Note to Self: Make Every Day… Valentine’s Day!
With Valentine's Day just around the corner, it’s the perfect time for you and your special someone to treat yourselves to not only an evening out, but an entire day devoted to love and affection. Each year on February 14th, we exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with our special “Valentine.” The day of romance we call Valentine’s Day dates all the way back to the 5th century. But this year is a new year and a new Valentine’s Day. This year, I made a promise to myself – and one that I intend to keep. This February 14th will be a Valentine’s gift to me… from me!
In wanting to look and feel my very best for myself, my partner, my family and friends, now in my mid-30s, I’ve realized that I can slap on all the makeup I want to look attractive. But truth be told, physical beauty begins and ends with healthy skin. When I look in the mirror, I know that it’s all about a complexion that glows without the promise of expensive highlighters, powder or blush. I used to think that feeling comfortable in my own skin, meant that I could greet the day with just any no-name brand face wash, a dab of moisturizer (if and when I remembered) and I would be good to go.
Now I know better and I know that when my skin is hydrated, cared for and truly loved, that’s where ultimate skin health begins. So here I am, note to self for Valentine’s Day and every day after that: Good skin care starts with me from the moment I open my eyes. It all starts with a solid morning skin care routine, but is washing my face with a gentle cleanser topped off with moisturizer enough? I’ve recently discovered that the answer is no, never (never ever!).
To get back my once youthful glow, you know, that fresh, radiant look I had several years ago (before kids), I learned the importance of retaining my skin’s moisture, something that ‘should be’ every woman’s best-kept beauty secret. Hyaluronic acid does the trick. But don’t let the word “acid” scare you. Hyaluronic acid is a natural ingredient in our skin. Its magic lies in its ability to retain moisture, the real-deal behind young-looking skin. As we age and especially as we reach our 40’s, our body produces less Hyaluronic acid and our skin loses much of its moisture. Hyaluronic acid, applied twice daily, replenishes the skin with the nourishing ingredients it needs to stay radiant and youthful. And yes, it’s that simple.
So here’s my Valentine’s Day (and every day) skin care routine: Wash face. Pat dry. Apply Hyaluronic acid (combined with Vitamin C) serum. Massage into skin. Apply moisturizer. Apply makeup. Apply a smile – and make every day Valentine’s Day.
